Gildas Quartet with Katherine Spencer
Thursday 19 September - Stratford Playhouse
Ticket Price: £20
Another in our + 1 series, in which the Gildas come again to play Mozart’s dramatic quartet - known as the ‘Dissonance’ for its extraordinary introduction – followed by Janacek’s deeply moving second quartet ‘Intimate Letters’, and then Caroline Shaw’s gentle but short but haunting one-movement piece. Then they are joined by Galliard Quintet member and well-known soloist, clarinettist Katherine Spencer, to play Weber’s scintillating and virtuoso quintet.
String Quartet No 19 in C Major
String Quartet No. 2
The Gildas Quartet have performed to critical acclaim at major venues and on BBC Radio 3. Praised for their ‘energy, verve and refreshing approach’, their bold and explorative attitude to performance has been recognised by the International Franz Schubert and Modern Music Competition, Graz, where they won first prize. In the past few years they have given recitals at international festivals including Oxford Lieder, Kings Lynn, Two Moors and Cheltenham.
Katherine Spencer made her concerto debut at 14 at the Royal Festival Hall and has since performed there as concerto soloist a further three times. She has also appeared as soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Academy of St Martin in the Fields Orchestra at the Barbican Centre and at Birmingham Symphony Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall, made many live Radio 3 solo broadcasts, and performs regularly on Classic FM and European radio stations.
